About 200 spring calving bred heifers will be offered Nov. 20 during the Southwest Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer sale at Joplin Regional Stockyards.
The sale begins at 7 p.m. at the stockyards at 10131 Cimarron Road in Carthage. Twelve consignors are expected to offer certified heifers with projected calving dates from late January through April 30.
The University of Missouri Extension program helps cattle producers develop replacement females through management, reproduction and genetic selection. MU Extension livestock field specialist Patrick Davis says the program aims to provide a dependable supply of quality bred heifers.
The offering will include purebred and crossbred commercial females. Breeds represented include Angus, Beefmaster, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Red Angus and Simmental, along with composites. Available colors include black, red and both black and red white-faced heifers.
Davis says many of the heifers carry pregnancies from artificial insemination using sires with high accuracy genetic evaluations. Those evaluations give buyers more information to assess expected calf performance and select females that fit their herd’s production goals.
Known breeding dates also help producers narrow expected calving dates and prepare for the season. Davis says crossbred females can offer benefits from hybrid vigor, including greater longevity.
