Opening Markets: Grains Mixed to Start September

The Ranch Opening Markets | Tuesday, September 1, 2026

Grain trade is mixed early Tuesday as September begins, with corn easing from Monday’s three-year highs, soybeans nearly steady and wheat under renewed pressure. Livestock futures have not opened for the day, so the cattle and hog figures below are Monday’s verified settlements.

Corn: December corn is trading near $5.36 3/4, down about 1 cent in early trade. Corn continues to find underlying support from strong export movement and concern over late-season crop conditions, but profit-taking is limiting the market after the August rally.

Soybeans: November soybeans are near $12.87 3/4, essentially steady to slightly lower. Monday’s USDA crop report showed soybean condition ratings slipping, keeping finishing-weather concerns in the market while traders also watch export demand.

Chicago Wheat: December Chicago wheat is trading lower in the early session. The latest verified Monday settlement was $7.74, down 10 cents. Tuesday trade remains pressured as some of last week’s Black Sea risk premium comes out of the market, although uncertainty over export flows from the region continues to provide support underneath prices.

Kansas City HRW Wheat: December Kansas City hard red winter wheat is also lower early Tuesday. Monday’s verified settlement was $8.38, down 6 1/4 cents. Black Sea developments remain the major headline driver for the wheat complex.

Live Cattle: Tuesday livestock trade has not opened. October live cattle settled Monday at $212.675, up 95 cents. Cattle bounced to finish August after several weeks of technical pressure, with the cash cattle market still an important guide for futures.

Feeder Cattle: October feeders settled Monday at $317.025, up 50 cents. Feeder contracts followed live cattle higher to close the month.

Lean Hogs: October lean hogs settled Monday at $83.675, up $1.775. Hogs led the livestock complex higher with strong month-end buying and short covering.

The Bottom Line: September opens with grains consolidating after a powerful August rally. Corn remains supported by exports and crop concerns, soybeans are watching finishing weather and demand, and wheat remains highly sensitive to Black Sea headlines. Livestock will open later this morning with cattle coming off Monday’s modest rebound and hogs carrying stronger momentum.
