Free BQA Programs Set for Shelbina and Ewing

SHELBINA, Mo. — Northeast Missouri beef producers can earn or renew their Beef Quality Assurance certification at either of two free University of Missouri Extension programs scheduled in Shelbina and Ewing.

The evening programs will take place Nov. 5 at the South Shelby Cafeteria in Shelbina and Jan. 14, 2027, at First Baptist Church in Ewing. Both begin at 6 p.m. and include a complimentary meal.

The sessions are open to producers seeking certification for the first time and those who need to renew. Producers need to attend only one of the programs to complete certification requirements.

Beef Quality Assurance, commonly known as BQA, is a national program covering management practices that support animal care, herd health, beef quality and producer profitability. Certification demonstrates a producer’s commitment to industry-recognized standards for raising cattle and producing safe, wholesome, high quality beef.

Brenda Schreck, MU Extension field specialist in livestock, says the training gives producers practical information they can apply in their own operations, whether they are new to BQA or returning for renewal.

Both sessions will cover current BQA guidelines, with information aimed at improving herd management, animal care and product quality. Schreck says participants will also learn practices that can support herd health, productivity and profitability while meeting certification requirements.

The Shelbina program will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, at the South Shelby Cafeteria, 4154 Highway 36. The registration deadline is Oct. 29. The Missouri Beef Industry Council and Monroe-Shelby County Cattlemen’s Association are sponsoring the meal.

The Ewing program is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 14, 2027, at First Baptist Church, 21875 State Highway 6. Producers must register by Jan. 7, 2027. The Lewis and Marion County Cattlemen’s Association and Canton Veterinary Clinic are sponsoring that meal.

Lewis County Extension is hosting both programs. There is no charge to attend.

To register for either session, call the MU Extension Center in Lewis County at 573-767-5273 or email Schreck at schreckb@missouri.edu.
