New Nebraska Brand Law Signed to Modernize Cattle Inspection and Governance
LINCOLN — Governor Jim Pillen has officially signed LB 1187, a landmark overhaul of the Nebraska Livestock Brand Act designed to settle long-standing industry disputes. The new law expands the Nebraska Brand Committee from five to seven members, specifically adding representatives for cattle feeders and livestock auction markets to reflect the modern industry. Key changes for producers include an increase in the maximum per-head inspection fee cap from $1.10 to $1.50 and a significant jump in the four-year brand registration fee to $400. While the law reduces mandatory audit frequency for registered feedlots to twice per year, it maintains strict proof-of-ownership requirements to deter theft across the state’s branding zone.
