A Washington state man is facing felony charges after authorities say he commandeered a cattle truck, drove away with a load of livestock, and then allegedly demanded money to return it.
According to court records filed in Franklin County, the incident happened May 27 near Eltopia. Investigators say 46-year-old Clemente Esquivel of Pasco crossed the median on Highway 395 and began pursuing a southbound semi hauling cattle.
Authorities allege Esquivel used his pickup to force the truck driver to slow down and pull off the highway. The driver later told investigators he was concerned that any sudden maneuver could result in a crash or injuries to the cattle being transported.
After both vehicles stopped near Eltopia West Road, investigators say a confrontation occurred between the two men. Court documents indicate the truck driver attempted to get back into the semi but was unable to do so before Esquivel drove away in the cattle truck.
Law enforcement officials say the suspect later sent a video message to the driver demanding $20,000 in exchange for the return of the truck and livestock.
Deputies were already interviewing the driver when Esquivel reportedly returned to the area and made contact with investigators. Authorities learned the truck is owned by Esquivel’s wife and had reportedly been used previously for hauling cattle and agricultural products. Investigators have not publicly identified what led to the dispute.
No injuries to the driver or livestock were reported.
Esquivel has been charged with first-degree theft, second-degree extortion, and reckless driving. Court records show he was later released after posting a $10,000 bond.
The case remains under investigation as prosecutors move forward with the charges.
