New equine ulcer treatment set to enter U.S. market

A new treatment option for equine gastric ulcers is set to enter the U.S. market, offering veterinarians and horse owners another tool to manage one of the most common health issues in performance horses.

Bimeda announced it is preparing to launch Gastrobim, an omeprazole-based product that has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a bioequivalent to GastroGard.

The product is intended for the treatment of gastric ulcers and for helping prevent recurrence in horses and foals at least four weeks of age. Equine gastric ulcer syndrome remains a widespread issue across the industry, particularly in performance animals, where stress, feeding schedules, and training intensity can contribute to the condition.

Animal health officials say ulcers can impact appetite, behavior, and overall performance, making effective treatment a priority for trainers and veterinarians alike.

Gastrobim has already been used in international markets, including Canada and parts of Europe, where it has gained traction among veterinary professionals. The U.S. launch is expected to expand access to treatment options as demand continues across the equine sector.

Company representatives say the product is designed to match the clinical effectiveness of existing therapies while providing another choice for managing equine health.

The treatment will be distributed through animal health channels nationwide, with availability expected in the near future.

Industry observers say additional options in this category could help broaden access to care, particularly as horse owners continue to focus on health, welfare, and performance outcomes.

The launch marks another development in the animal health space as companies continue to invest in products aimed at improving livestock and equine care across the country.
