NORTH PLATTE, NE — Cattle and grain producers in central and western Nebraska are facing a critical early-season challenge as extreme drought (D3) conditions persist across the region. According to the latest data from the U.S. Drought Monitor, unseasonably warm temperatures followed by recent hard freezes have left 65% of the state’s winter wheat crop rated in “very poor to “poor” condition as of April 26.
This environmental “double-whammy” is compounding the recovery efforts for ranchers already reeling from a historic wildfire season. In counties like Sheridan, stock ponds and meadows that have traditionally provided reliable water and forage for over a decade are reported as completely dry. Producers are increasingly relying on expensive supplemental feed and emergency hay convoys from neighboring states just to maintain herd health heading into the summer months.
