Fluctuating river levels are beginning to slow grain movement across key U.S. shipping corridors as spring demand picks up.

Along portions of the Mississippi River system, inconsistent water levels are forcing barge operators to lighten loads and adjust schedules. That reduces efficiency and increases transportation costs for commodities moving to export markets.

For farmers, the impact can show up in weaker basis levels as grain movement backs up in the system.

Logistics experts say conditions can shift quickly this time of year, but extended disruptions could tighten the supply chain just as planting season ramps up across the Midwest.
