MACON, Mo. — Hunters will have a new place to donate deer in Macon as Missouri tests refrigerated collection sites designed to get more venison to families facing hunger.
The Missouri Department of Conservation announced the Share the Harvest pilot Nov. 5. Four sites will operate Nov. 10 through Dec. 14, with daily access from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Macon location is MFA at 1805 N. Missouri St. Other sites are Comfort Inn at 1801 W. Outer Road in Moberly, Putnam County Fairgrounds at 615 N. 22nd St. in Unionville and MFA at 116 Main St. in Hale.
Donated deer must be field dressed and Telechecked. Animals must remain whole with the head and neck intact, although antlers and the skull cap may be removed. Hunters must complete the information requested at each site.
MDC will transport deer to participating processors for distribution through food assistance partners. Hunters pay no processing charges.
The pilot will test whether easier drop-off access increases donations. Share the Harvest aims to double annual donations to 10,000 deer by 2027.
