UPDATE NOV. 5: This event has been canceled. Organizers say they are planning a field day in 2027. No new date has been announced. The original preview below is retained for context; its registration and attendance information no longer applies.

LURAY, Mo. — MU Extension had scheduled a Show-Me-Select field day for Saturday, Nov. 7, at Trump BK Angus in Luray. Organizers have since canceled the event.

The program will focus on selecting and developing females for successful breeding and productive years in the cow herd.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by educational programming at 10. Lunch is scheduled for noon. There is no charge to attend.

Selection decisions reach beyond one breeding season

Replacement females represent an investment in the herd’s future. Selecting heifers that breed successfully and remain productive can affect both reproductive performance and the cost of maintaining the cow herd.

The field day will examine reproductive management and fertility prediction, giving producers information to use when deciding which heifers to retain and how to develop them.

MU Extension state beef reproduction specialist Thiago Martins says the program is designed to help producers use data in those decisions. The educational focus includes improving the likelihood that retained heifers become productive cows.

The program will also address the relationship between replacement selection, herd longevity and expenses associated with females that remain open or perform poorly.

Luray hosts Saturday’s program

Martins and MU Extension’s Zac Erwin are organizing the event. It follows an October field day in Milan as part of the same educational effort.

Support comes from a North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education partnership grant focused on reproductive and genomic factors associated with pregnancy outcomes in heifers.

Producers can register for the Luray event through the MU Extension Center in Adair County at 660-665-9866 or by emailing adairco@missouri.edu.

Martins can provide additional information at 573-673-8118 or thiago.martins@missouri.edu.
